General Duties: Maintains order and discipline, and provides coordination and direction of daily activities of the inmates detained at the Orangeburg Calhoun County Regional Detention Center. Processes incoming subjects by fingerprinting, searching, completing necessary forms during the booking process, photographing, supervising the phone calls made by inmates and subjects being booked, and inventorying and storing personal properties. Prepares and maintains documents and reports including daily progress reports, booking reports, property reports, medical forms, activity sheets, released sheets, medical and phone logs, jail and court lists, head count forms, time sheets, receipts, incident reports, and computer release dates. Provides basic and emergency first aid to inmates and others as required. Performs security inspections and keeps head count of inmates under supervision. Performs safety and sanitary inspections of building, grounds and prisoners quarters. Examines cash, packages, letters and other articles to detect contraband. Discharges inmates. Assigns and escorts inmates dressed out in jail clothing and fills out forms used in dressing out inmates for cell block. Supervises feeding of prisoners, counts utensils when meals are completed, and maintains conditions of county property and floor areas. Supervises and ensures that inmates with special needs such as suicidal inmates, inmates with contagious diseases, or special medical problems receive required attention. Prepares court lists to prepare inmates for courts. Ensures the safety and security of all visitors during visitation and for any other reasons necessary.
Escorts inmates individually or in small groups to and from compound, visiting room, hospital, doctors and nurses sick calls, and supervises inmates during sick call. Escorts inmates from the cell block areas to the discharge area for release, and escorts inmates to cell from court as required. Supervises newly admitted inmates during dress out into county clothing, ensuring inmates issued the proper clothing and bedding items. Assists inmates with problems. Operates and uses equipment including televisions, VCR, fire extinguisher, washer/dryer, incinerators, copier, control panel, two-way radios, cameras, handcuffs, shotguns, stun guns, prisoner restraint items, air lock, mace and computers.
Provides assistance to supervisors in various assignments and activities, and counsels and disciplines inmates as required. Provides assistance to all personnel entering the facility and to various law enforcement personnel with difficult subjects. Monitors surveillance equipment and maintains communication by means of radios and telephones.
Job Qualifications: High school diploma or general education degree (GED). The individual selected will have the ability to apply common sense understanding, judgment and the capacity to make sound and reasonable decisions. Must possess a valid SC driver's license.
