In 1772, the first Sheriff was appointed to provide law enforcement protection to the then Orangeburgh District. Over the more than 200 years since William Thomson took office, the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office has progressed into a full service law enforcement agency that encompasses field services, judicial operations, criminal investigations, civil processing, community services, and special operations. We serve 92,501 citizens in a county that spans 1,106 square miles, the second largest geographic county in the state of South Carolina.
