The Roads and Bridges Department (which consists of 4 maintenance areas and a roving/construction crew) maintains and repairs roads which are under the County’s jurisdiction. This includes approximately 883 miles of unpaved roads and approximately 147 miles of paved roads.
The department’s construction division is responsible for the construction and paving of county owned roads which is funded under the Capital Projects Sales Tax.
Duties
Fabricate, install and maintain street name signs on all roads in the county except for those within the City Limits of Orangeburg
Install and maintain traffic control signs on County maintained roads
Install and repair driveway pipes and culverts
Issue encroachment permits for work to be done within the prescribed limits of a county maintained road or within the road right-of-way
Maintain outfall ditches that provide drainage away from County roads
Maintain roads that are under the County’s jurisdiction
Maintain roadside vegetation
Patch pavement potholes
Pave driveway aprons on county maintained paved roads
Roads and Bridges Department does not:
Install or maintain traffic lights
Provide maintenance on any state or private road or property
